Shebdon

Distance: Three-and-a-half miles.
Terrain: Easy walking on lanes, tracks and canal towpaths. No stiles.

1. Start near the Wharf Inn at the north end of the village. Take the path opposite the pub car park, which leads up to the canal.

2. Then turn left along the towpath for about 3/4 mile until reaching a wharf, which was originally attached to the former Cadbury’s factory behind it.

Pass under bridge 45, turn left up the steps and continue out on to the road.

3. Turn left, crossing the canal, and continue past the factory and through the hamlet of Knighton as far as a small gate with a fingerpost on the right.

4. Pass through this, continue ahead alongside the boundary of Knighton Hall and around to the left of the pool, before descending the bank to a footbridge at the bottom.

5. Cross over into a large undulating field, bear half-left as indicated, and head for the left-hand corner of the small wood at the top.

6. Continue ahead along the right-hand field boundary to a gate, turn right through it and follow the route between fences to join a grassy track which leads out on to a lane.

7. Turn right along this for about 100 yards and turn left down a green lane which ends at a lane junction.

8. Then turn right along this as far as the canal bridge, cross over and turn right down the steps to the towpath.

9. Continue as far as the path on the left which leads back to the start.
