Moreton Corbet

Distance: Three-and-a-half miles

1. Start from Moreton Corbet castle, just off the road from Shawbury to Wem. The original castle keep dates from the twelfth century and is dominated by the ruins of the more modern structure, which was begun around 400 years later.

Turn left along the lane and continue ahead at the road junction, following this stretch of tarmac as it meanders along to its junction with the A53.

2. Turn left onto the verge and then left along the drive to Sowbath Farm, following a Shropshire Way sign.

3. Where the drive bears left, go ahead as directed through the farmyard and a gate into a field. Head for the far-left corner, then drop down to cross a stile and footbridge, then through a gate into a wood.

4. On leaving this, continue along the left-hand side of the next field to another stile. Cross this and continue along the right-hand boundary to a stile.

5. Cross and head across the small field to another stile by a gate leading into a lane on the edge of Stanton-upon-Hine-Heath.

6. Bear right at the junction at the top and almost immediately left and continue to a road junction in the centre of the village.

7. Go ahead, then follow the road round to the left to leave the village and follow this back to Moreton Corbet, turning left at the first road junction which leads back to the castle.
