Animals saved after appeal

jeannie-with-bill-and-ben1.jpgScores of animals from a doomed Shropshire sanctuary have been spared following an appeal in the Shropshire Star.

Sanctuary proprietor Jeannie Mullinder feared she may have to have her menagerie destroyed after being told by her landlord to vacate her rented farmyard near Sutton Maddock.

Jeannie, 62, made an impassioned plea in the Shropshire Star to find new premises for herself and the animals.

Despite drawing a blank on finding a suitable property, kind-hearted readers came forward to offer homes for the animals.

Heartbroken Jeannie will move into a one-bedroom flat in Aqueduct tomorrow - the first time she has been without her menagerie for 25 years.

She is devastated at losing the animals many of whom come in pairs and have been given celebrity names such as ducks Posh and Becks. But she said she was relieved she did not have to have them put down.

Jeannie built up the sanctuary over the last 25 years, taking in rabbits, ducks, hens, chickens, sheep, goats, cats and cockerels.

Some had been cruelly treated, others had been rescued from slaughterhouses and livestock auctions.

On the eve of beginning a new life without her beloved pets, Jeannie said: “I’m going to be absolutely desolate but at least I know the animals are going to be all right.

“I’ve had no luck in finding suitable premises and the only good thing is that I have not had to put the animals down.

“Because of the article in the Shropshire Star I have managed to rehome the animals. I’ve had lots of response and people have been so kind.”
