Vintage cars help reveal date

Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury. It looks to be about the mid-1950s.

Lovers of old cars will probably have little trouble narrowing down the date of this photo of Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury. It looks to be about the mid-1950s.

Somebody is up a ladder on the Lion Hotel - cleaning the windows, presumably.

Older Salopians will remember some of the shops in view, like Richards on the extreme left.

The sign on the shop closest to the Lion seems to read Fablands or something like that.

Picture: Ray Farlow.

I think the van in the foreground is a Morris. The car two behind it is certainly an Austin Devon, and the vehicle making its way up the hill is a Standard Vanguard.

I can’t clearly identify the others from the photo…

Yes, the van is a Morris ‘J’ type, in production from 1949 to 1961. I am sure the car behind it is a Ford Consul series 1, first produced in 1951, so that is the earliest date possible for the picture. I can’t see enough of the car behind the Vanguard to identify it.

The car climbing the hill looks very much like a Jowett Javelin.
