Folk in the Little Wenlock area are a bit het up at the moment about proposals for opencast coal mining at nearby New Works.
There is quite a history of opencast mining in the area, as this picture shows.
It was used in the Shropshire Star of January 14, 1972, along with a story telling how villagers were worried that the “Coalbrookdale road” from Little Wenlock could be hit by a landslip caused by the mining.
The caption said “the road runs top right”.

this image demonstrates the history of the locality .the sooner the coal is extracted the sooner the land can be reclaimed and utilised as collectively decided as best . To pretend that this coal should be ignored is to delay the inevitability.
i bet you live miles away
you’d lose that bet!
I live in South Wales, in an area that has had opencast for 60 years. We have watched the huge black hole move slowly down our valley, destroying everything within its path. We have had no restoration of the site for 13 years!
At present we are fighting another proposed extension, even though the last extraction was supposed to end opencast in our beautiful valley for ever. We know from experience that once opencast starts, it will go on for many years. My advice to you is to fight as hard as you can to prevent the start of opencast operations in your area.
