Party plans to be unveiled

Organisers of Shrewsbury Heritage Celebrations will unveil plans for next year’s event at a party to celebrate the success of this year’s Civil War commemorations.

In the summer, more than 6,000 people turned out to watch a two-day the Civil War display, including the Sealed Knot Civil War Re-enactment Society display in The Quarry. Its success will be celebrated on October 12.

Andrew Bannerman, director of the Shrewsbury Heritage Celebrations, said after the huge success of the fourth production, the group was now looking to the future.

The aim of Shrewsbury Heritage Celebrations is to celebrate a different era each year in the town’s history.

Mr Bannerman said that at the party, on October 12 at the Belmont Arts Centre, plans would be revealed for 2008 as well as 2009, which will be a huge event to coincide with the Darwin bicentenary celebrations.

He said: “We always have an annual party in which we look back on what we have achieved that year and what plans we have for the next year.

“We will be telling people how successful it was this year and giving a flavour for next year and 2009.”

He added: “2009 is the big one. The money has now run out from our Heritage Lottery funding so we need to put in new applications and the idea is to have a smaller celebration next year in preparation for the Darwin event so the two events will probably be linked.

“The period will be the Victorians which gives us a lot of scope because it was a very important period in the town’s history.

“It would be wonderful if we could use The Maltings if that’s in any shape by then to be a backdrop to something we do.

“If we had access to The Mount, Darwin’s House, that would be great. There’s all kinds of exciting possibilities. 2008 will be something smaller but exciting to wet appetites but we have to get grant applications in.”

The party on October 12 is for people who were involved in last year’s production.
