Goldstone

goldst1.jpgDistance: Four miles.
Terrain:  Easy walking on fieldpaths, lanes and canal towpaths. Five stiles.

1. Start at the staggered crossroads at Goldstone Common to the east of the A529. At the crossroads, take the unsignposted lane, which climbs slowly with a wood on the right.

2. Continue ahead at the T junction and through the hamlet of Lockley Wood to the junction with the A529.

Turn left down this for about 175 yards before turning left into Allmans Lane. Continue along this to a gate at the end.

3. Pass through, cross over a stile on the right and continue down the left-hand boundary of three fields before continuing ahead to a stile leading out of the drive leading to Hinstock Grange. (Access note, May 2009 - we have been told that some of the stiles are either broken or in bad repair).

4. Turn left and left again at the cross roads. Immediately after Goldstone Hall turn right down Westcott Lane and follow it as far as the gate on the right which gives access to the towpath of the Shropshire Union Canal (amended May 2009).

5. Once on the towpath, turn left along it for about 3/4 mile as far as the bridge adjacent to Goldstone Wharf.

6. Leave the canal at this point, and on reaching the lane, either turn left up the hill to return to the start or turn right over the bridge to visit the Wharf Tavern.
