Distance: Two-and-a-half miles.
Terrain: Easy walking on lanes, fieldpaths and canal towpath.
1. Start at or near Chirk Railway Station. Cross the railway bridge and continue along the lane to the gates of Chirk Castle, which are almost 300 years old
Turn left on to the drive to a caravan park and continue ahead when this bends to the left.
2. Continue to a junction, turn right to descend through the woods, before emerging on to a road. Turn right on to this and walk down to the T-junction at the bottom.
Just before the bridge, turn left through a kissing gate and walk alongside the River Ceiriog, passing under the viaduct and the aqueduct, before reaching the road.
3. Turn right up the old A5 and right again to pass in front of the Bridge Inn and climb up to the village of Chirk Bank.
Then turn right along the canal towpath, cross over the aqueduct with the Ceiriog below and head for the canal tunnel where you have a choice.
4. The more adventurous may like to walk through the tunnel (there is a handrail alongside the towpath inside). On reaching daylight at the end, turn sharp right up the track which leads back to the station.
If this does not appeal, walk up the path to the right of the tunnel entrance, cross over the road by the mini roundabout and continue ahead alongside the railway line back to the station.
