Nostalgia for a rockin’ rink

ice.jpgBeing a video journalist isn’t all that bad. You get to tour the county, watching a whole range of events, sports and news unfold, writes our Video Blogger James Shaw.

Plus, there is always the opportunity to fend off that dreaded of all questions - “Are you from Midlands Today?” NO!

“Sky?” NO!

“Central?” NO!!!

Now leave me alone while I sit in a corner and contemplate the size of the food chain I’m attempting to climb.

Seriously, there is always a hint of jealousy in my eyes when I see the Central and Midlands Today vans draw up - they always have bigger lenses than me . . .

But there is an upside to not working for one of of the “big two” in the Midlands - I get to know about all the other events that they don’t bother to cover.

One such instance is the Telford Tigers.

Having watched the Tigers all through my childhood and even attempted to play the game (after three years of trying, I still couldn’t hit the puck hard) Saturday’s game was a joy to film.

Naturally, there was some difficulty in terms of keeping up with play, but on the whole it was great.

In the old days, crowds of 2,500 were not unusual at Telford and at the moment, around 600 people are watching every game - although the noise suggests many more.

The team needs another big push to put it in that bracket where players of similar calibre to Tim Salmon, Kevin Conway and even Gerard Waslen can once again grace the ice.

In other, more homely matters, I have a request. My cat has developed an odd habit of sitting in the empty bath - staring at the taps.

He seems to be obsessed with the dripping and even tries to catch the water as it tumbles down the plughole.

The problem I have here is that I would love to see what he gets up to during the day.

Does anyone know of some sort of tiny camera I can strap to his head (it would have to be VERY tiny, of course) so I can have a cat’s-eye view of his activities?

I’m talking about something that’s barely visible and weighs nothing . . . before anyone gets annoyed or enraged.

I’m just fascinated to see how my cat and dog interact during the day and whether they do dance the tango on their hind legs.

That last bit was made up - but at least I would be able to find out . . .

Telford Tigers are most definitely back in town. Gone are the ‘boom or bust’ owners, with our new management slowly and carefully taking the team forward each season without the threat of falling off the ice hockey map again or financial ruin.

One thing Telford needs however are more fans, more of those passionate supporters that used to pack the stands and queue for hours just to get in the building on a Saturday night.

Please get behind the team and come along to watch us - the boys are back in town and we need you!
