Thirty workers are to lose their jobs at one of Bridgnorth’s largest firms. Compulsory redundancies are planned as part of measures to cut costs at Novelis. The company, in Stourbridge Road, has already successfully sought 90 voluntary redundancies, as part of a jobs shake-up announced in April.
However, it needs to reduce its workforce further and so another 30 people will lose their jobs.
The aluminium plant wants to reach its target of 120 redundancies and bosses today said they were now in the process of enforcing job cuts.
Some workers have already left the company as part of the compulsory redundancy plan.
Joan Chesney, communications director at the aluminium plant, said the firm needed to streamline its workforce to improve profitability and keep up with foreign competition.
Companies overseas were producing aluminium at low cost and Novelis needed to be more competitive.
Mrs Chesney said: “We have had 90 volunteers and then there will be 30 compulsory redundancies, it’s a very high number of volunteers really.
“Those under compulsory redundancy all know about it now and some of them have already left.
“The process started in September and by the end of this month, the majority will have left.”
The company, which employs 420 people, is also restructuring.
Changes will see the plant focus on a smaller product range. Novelis is the world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling.
The company has long been one of the largest employers in Bridgnorth, with many workers living in the town or surrounding villages.
