Wrekin climber rescued

wrekin.jpgA climber had to be rescued after he got stuck 60ft up the side of The Wrekin.

The man, in his mid 20s, had gone climbing on his own on the Forest Glen cliff last night but ran into difficulty after crumbling rock made his descent unsafe.

The climber managed to grab the attention of a passer-by who then telephoned for help.

A fire crew from Wellington went to the Wrekin at about 8pm and firefighters used an aerial climbing ladder to help get him down.

Andy Joseph, sub-officer at Wellington Fire Station, today said: “He had gone climbing on his own and had got so far and the rock face was crumbing so he decided not to try to make his way down.

“He was up there for a total of an hour and a quarter so he was rather chilly by the end,” he added.

Meanwhile, a man was rescued from a stretch of canal on the north Shropshire border overnight.

Police were called to the Shropshire Union Canal in Audlem just before midnight to reports that a man was in the water.

The Forest Glen Cliff is NOT on the Wrekin. It is on the other side of the road.

Indeed the cliff near the old Forest Glen site is part of the Ercall and not the Wrekin.
Not really sure why the slanderous comment was necessary about Telford. People are quick to slate the town, but it provides much needed employment for many people and is certainly more to it than just the ugly concrete block of the Telford Town Center. Without Telford, you’d be driving to B’ahm or further to find work.

PAH TO RESPONSIBLE ADULTS, a world with adults who never trod off the path would be very boring and no pioneers would ever leave home to explore, you want to get some guts and try something a little more daring than a walk down the street or a drive to the supermarket.

Never mind the guy who got stuck up there what about wasting the fire services time rescuing someone who was stupid enough to go climbing alone at night! Im all for climbing but you need to be sensible about it. I think we need to praise the man who is brave enough to work for the fire service and save him!
