County hotel was a farm in 60s

farm1tm.jpgMadeley Court is these days a hotel, but this series of pictures shows what things were like within living memory.

They show outbuildings, the main house and a sundial at the historic building, which was apparently a farm at the time.

The photos was e-mailed in by Paul France, of Coalbrookdale, who says: “They were taken in 1964 by Jeff Wheeldon. I think it was still being operated as a farm at that time, either by the Barnett family or the Heighways.

“I think I’m right in saying that the last person to live there was a Nelson Walmsley who worked for Telford Development Corporation at the time, probably around the late 60s or early 70s.

“It would have made an ideal film set for Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings.”

My goodness, yes. My grandfather was born in one of the houses around the ‘Court Pool’ in the 1800’s… My Mom, Dorothy Jones and my aunt the late Marjorie Jones of Madeley, spent hours and hours playing in ‘Barnets Coppice’ as it was known, and even now my Mom recollects how things used to be down ‘the Court’ Personally, I remember the pigs and chickens just roaming around the farm yard and Mrs Barnett milking the cows. My brother and his mates spent hours fishing in the Court Pool, idly watching the swans nesting..this was in the 60’s when Madeley was Madeley, everyone knew each other, there was no crime, no violence…Oh, yes they were happy days, just like the old television series, The Darling Buds of May. A paradise in the countryside.
