A Telford van driver was today jailed for a year after leaving women’s underwear outside a house with obscene comments written on them.
Neil Hartley, of Ardern Avenue, Dawley, admitted causing woman and her two teenage daughters to fear violence would be caused against them by harassment when he left the underwear outside their house on four occasions between September 17, 2006, and December 13, 2006.
He was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment and given a restraining order for five years, and told not to contact the three women.
Max Bennett, prosecuting, said the 41-year-old told police he was a van driver and often drove past the house. Mr Bennett said messages left on the pants at the gate were full of obscenities.
David Garside, for Hartley, said: “It is a serious matter. All three of the ladies must have been severely distressed.” He said Hartley had no intention of carrying out the threats, adding: “This is an offence of words rather than action.”
Judge Robin Onions, sentencing, said the pants left at the house were “grossly offensive messages”.
He said the women had no way of knowing the threats would not be carried out.
“They became the object of your unwanted intentions. I’m quite satisfied that you must have seen them at some stage,” he said.
“These ladies must have been terrified as a result of what you did. This was a prolonged course of conduct over three months.”

Either you’re just a wind up merchant or you have nothing better to do other than slate Telford off.
I’ll ask again.
Where do you live Gary?.
Is it paradise, is it Never never land where you can live in total ignorance of the real world outside YOUR doorstep?.
Wherever it is the command of the English language is a low priority.

Do what this idiot did and get 12 months, murder your brother in a drunken rage (as was reported a few days ago) and get just over twice as long, ie 27 months. This is the state of our “justice” in Britain today under a New Labour Government. If I was the panty and bra discarder, I would be feeling pretty choked as we all should be. An absolute disgrace. Both Judges should themselves be made to serve the outrageous sentences that they awarded.

Get a life Gary. No doubt nothing of news worth ever happens in Shrewsbury does it? What rubbish.
I for one am glad to see that those poor ladies finally get to have some peace. I feel sorry for those that are so petty and immature that they feel the need to constantly critisize Telford (albiet in appalling english)
FYI No i do not originate from Telford I just live here.

Gary, you really are a weapons-grade bigot and snob aren’t you.
I note with interest the “headlines” you have commented on: “three face attack”, “man wakes to see burglar”, “jailed for obscene threats”. Headlines I’m sure you would find in any small provincial town, Shrewsbury included.
I also note that gun crime seems rather more prevalent in the county town than in Telford and I, for one, would rather live where I’d be a more likely to find unsavoury comments on some undercrackers than where the chance of looking down the barrel of a gun is a very real threat.
Yes. I live in Telford, and have been for four years now. I’ve resided in Shropshire for 19 years, and Telford people are by far the friendliest.
