Is Emily Hunt, who has 21 GCSE passes, the brightest spark in Shropshire or even the country?
The 16-year-old pupil from Admaston, Telford, has 15 A*s and six A grades – and has already taken half an A-level in English.

She picked up the stunning set of results, which she puts down to “late nights working hard”, at Thomas Telford School yesterday. Emily took three of her exams early, two last year and one even the year before.
Among her achievements are maths, English literature, English language, French, physics, chemistry, biology, history, ICT, leisure and tourism, business studies, performing arts and two in art. She is now planning to take history, art, English language and English literature A-levels.
Emily said: “I wasn’t expecting them to be this good, certainly not all of them! My family are very pleased – and a bit shocked.”
Emily added she was now looking forward to the rest of the holiday. However, as well as a fortnight in the Canary Islands, she also earned her silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Among the other shining lights at Thomas Telford were Rhiannon Newman, of Priorslee, with 13A*s and seven As, and Neil Allard, of Red Lake, with 10A*s and six As.

Hard work reaps rewards – well done Emily. If only the rest of our younger generation were so committed, we would not have the sad headlines we have seen today.

Why do you need 21 GCSE’s when colleges ask for 5 ‘c’ and above?
Likewise University ask for 3 ‘A’ levels not 5?
Just a thought.

Hardly inspirational.
I would say a waste of time, as they will be forgotten when her ‘A’ Levels are over!

Well done indeed.
Interestingly, when I did my GCSE exams about 15 years ago, the very brightest child in the region, who then went on to Cambridge, only took 11 GCSE exams, compared to the 9 the rest of us took. If it is true that exam grades are as valid today as they were 15 years ago it would seem that Emily is well on her way to becoming President of the World.

Well done Emily – its a shame that a large majority of young people dont think in the same way as you!
Enjoy your holiday – you deserve it!

Julian I couldn’t have said it more diplomatically myself. With your comments reflecting my own comments regarding A-levels last week.
Well done Emily!

Come clean Thomas Telford, some of these gcse’s are not what they seem. Not putting the girl down but some subjects count for three results and some are gnvq type qualifications. Bit of a cheat when other schools don’t do that

i think she did really well however she has done way to many exams why do u need tht many gcse’s. i myself got 11 and i am over qualified i think it is mainly due to her school because tht is wot Thomas telford do they push and push you because they have more facilities to do so. i think it is unfair to say young people don’t think the same because i know loads of people who are bright and worked extremely hard but did not get 21 GCSE’s. if everyone woz given the same guidance as her then maybe everyone would get the same grades. however i am not disputing the fact tht she is clever and i think she did really well to get wot she did

Well done Emily :o) You must have worked incredibly hard to pass all those with the grades you achieved, I take my hat off to you, and your very obviously supportive family.
As for those that chose to insult or attempt to decry your efforts – You can take satisfaction in the knowledge that their education was quite clearly wasted as their apparent lack of grammar suggests. No doubt they spent more time on their “matez wot goes cruisin and chillin”

I agree, nobody should insult or decry Emily’s efforts. She is clearly very intelligent, probably more so than anyone else in the county.
But the fact remains, I find it hard to believe that she can do 21 GCSEs when the best of the best 15 years ago could only manage about half that number. I do not believe that she is twice as intelligent as they were.
And please don’t run my comments through your spell checker John Smith, you would be wasting your time because I make no claims about my own abilities.

Thanks everyone, I really appreiciate your congratulations. Just to clear a few things up:
I took spearate, single GCSEs in 11 subjects, 1 BTEC and a GNVQ qualification in each of which a distinction gained me 2 A*s and 2 A equivilants, and a double award which gained me 2 As. So I did not take 21 different subjects which would, I agree, have been way too much to do.
I know Thomas Telford is not the only school which offer’s GNVQs and other similar qualifications as my brother, who attends charlton school, also had the option of choosing these types of qualifications. I don’t know that the facilities help us get the grades but the three hour lesson sysem and discipline works well and the teachers are very helpful.
The reason I took that number of subjects was because I had to, not out of choice and I am doing 5 A levels because everyone has to choose three plus the compulsary ICT in sixth form and, as I have already done half the english language A level, I might as well continue with it.
I’m not a genius and definately do not want to be president of the world,(thanks for the suggestion though.)
Thanks again for all of your kind comments, especially those who have stuck up for me.
Good luck in whatever you do in the future.

Emily is one of my friends, and those of you who say its a waste of time are jealous! She’s super brainy, super talented and a really nice girl! Leave her alone. Thomas Telford school does use GNVQ’s, but other schools have the access to this and choose not to use it, more fool them! I go to the school and can’t fault it. Jealousy is the main cause for spiteful comments!
