Doug Morris, 75, from Oswestry, died while on a training run near his home.

He was still competing as a veteran in road and cross country racing, but he was best known as the organiser of more than a dozen races, including the Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon.

Hundreds of runners from across the country are expected to join family and friends at Mr Morris’s funeral. It will be held at St Oswald’s Parish Church at 2.30pm.

The service will be followed by interment at Llanymynech Cemetery, in Mr Morris’s home village, where he first started running to and from school.

Donations in lieu of flowers are to go to the Oswestry Olympians Track Appeal and the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Mr Morris served in the RAF, representing the force at athletics, and was one of the founders of the Oswestry Olympians.

He spoke out at the loss of the club’s training facilities when the former Park Hall Stadium was sold for redevelopment as the new home of Welsh football club The New Saints and was one of those spearheading the appeal to fund a new track.

Last week saw the running of the final race in the Pentarathon series Mr Morris had organised.

Mr Morris’s wife, Margaret, had urged all the runners taking part to achieve personal bests in his memory.
