Smaller shops in Wem are being crippled by big retailers, a councillor has warned.
Councillor John Murray said at least four small businesses in the town had been forced to close their doors over the last six months and more were suffering.
The North Shropshire District and Wem town councillor today hit out at bigger stores and urged people to continue shopping locally and support the rural economy.
“If we want to maintain our small rural shops in the high street then we should shop local. It’s all too easy to order on the net but we must at all costs support our high street,” he said.
Councillor Murray pinpointed the Tesco store at Harlescott, Shrewsbury, as being a large factor in people not spending money locally.
Doug Forrester, who owns R Johnson’s butchers in Wem, said his businesses had not been affected badly by newer retail giants, but felt local shops in general are in decline.
“We will never get Wem back on its feet like it used to be,” he said.
A spokesman for Tesco said: “There are many reasons why businesses come and go, not all of them are to do with Tesco.”

As someone who lives a mile and a half outside Wem, I would love to be able to take advantage of my local High Street.
However as I work full time it is not as easy as it seems. Very few if the shops are open at 9am and are closed by 5pm. Even on a Saturday, surely the day that most working people get time to shop, A lot of them are closed for an hour at lunchtime and some are even closed all afternoon.
The local Co-Op seems to be making the most of the fact that it is the only supermarket for 8 miles by charging extortionate prices. I don’t see how Tesco can be marked out as the bad guy, other Co-Ops I have been too are cheaper than the one in Wem. Even the local Costcutter shop can work out a lot cheaper.
I will return to shopping in Wem when I know that I can find the shops I want to go to are going to be open if I pop down anytime between 9am and 5.30pm. I have had enough trips where I find they are closed and I have to get in the car and go elsewhere.
