A Shropshire woman who kept a poignant diary of her fight against bowel cancer is now hoping her story will help save lives in the county.
Sue Gibson has bravely revealed some of her most private thoughts in a bid to encourage people not to ignore potential signs of the disease.
The move comes after Sue, a nurse practitioner from Market Drayton, took months to see a doctor about her own health concerns because she was too busy and embarrassed to talk about her symptoms.
“Bowel cancer has changed my life forever. The most frustrating thing is that when it is caught early, it can be totally cured, and the surgery relatively minor,” said Sue, who specialises in women’s health.
“I literally sat on my symptoms, for many months”.

I wish Sue Gibson every success in her fight against bowel cancer. I’m the BBC Watchdog presenter who survived advanced bowel cancer 16 years ago and with the backing of the Royal College of Nursing and nurses like Sue, I’m spearheading a campaign to get our MPs screened for this common cancer to help save lives. Sue’s right - this cancer is preventable and curable yet only just over half the people eligible for the official NHS Screening programme are taking part.
