A disabled man was racially abused and beaten with branches in a “particularly nasty” attack at a Telford bus stop, police said today. The man needed hospital treatment.
The 36-year-old suffered a swollen cheekbone, bruising and swelling to his hands and arms and bruising to the back and side of his head.
Telford Police spokeman Chris Ammonds said the victim, who has severe arthritis, was standing alone at a bus stop in Stirchley Avenue between 6.45 and 8pm on Monday when he was approached by three men who asked for a cigarette.
Although the men racially abused him, the victim did not want any trouble and handed the men cigarettes.
Mr Ammonds said one of the three men then left the scene, while the other two moved into a bush area behind the bus stop.
After a short period the two men came back out and attacked the victim, hitting him in the face with branches they had ripped from a bush.
Mr Ammonds said: “Both men were holding a branch during the attack and while striking the victim they also continued to racially abuse him. The victim attempted to get away, but they pursued him and continued to strike him.
“Fortunately, at this point, a car pulled up and its occupants rushed to the victim’s aid, causing the attackers to flee the scene.”
The attackers have been described as being white and aged between 15 and 17. One is thought to be about 5ft 5in and the other about 5ft 7in. They were wearing dark jog suits and put their hoods up before the attack started.
One of the attackers is thought to have had a yellow-framed bicycle.
Information can be passed to police by calling 08457 444888.

Hope the victim recovers soon and never has to endure this kind of situation ever again.

Catch whoever did this and give them a kicking I say. Maybe this makes us just as bad as those thugs but it seems to be the only language they understand. If they caught what will it be? Slap on the wrist?

They are little cowards who need some discipline. Bring back conscription and teach them some manners. They wear hoods so no-one can identify them because they are such cowards.I hope they are brought to justice soon.

What on earth is Mandela Ngozulu on about “as our police dont have funding when the victim is black and disabled ” ??? Get a grip have you ever walked through Wellington at night & been verbally abused & followed by a group of young black men purely because your skin is white ??? I have & i can honestly say All Telford residents did not come together as one & condem this barbaric action. All we hear about is racist this & racist that against black & ethnic people……….What about the racisim that white people have to endure on a daily basis ???

Whatever the motive for the attack, it was inhumane and no one should harm anyone in this way, regardless of skin colour, disability etc. However, anyone can be victim of a racist attack. I work in race relations and I can tell you it is not just ‘visible’ ethnic minorities that are victims; white skinned people can also be victims. Unfortunately, the media plays a part in what is told and what is not, but anyone with common sense will know and appreciate, it is down to an individual what they perceive of another. Best wishes to the victim in this attack and may the authorities send out the right message in the punishments given, if any. It makes you wonder where our society is going….

All racism is bad, Lou has a point, sometimes racism against white people does get over looked but that doesn’t mean we should allow ourselves to create an even bigger “us” and “them” camp, I am not a brave person but I will not stand for racism against any person, White, Black, Asian, African, Chinese, Jewish etc so Lou remember not all people ignore racism against white people, it might seem that way to you at times but it is not the case.

I am as a white british citizen
very shocked and disapointed in this disgusting ignorant behaviour that is happening in 2007.. I am suprised the way Lou and Mandela have not shown any sympathy at all for this poor man who has been a victim of a racist attack . Mandela seemed to attack our police straight away for not arresting the people who did this .. I do agree with some of the things that Lou and Mandela said in their comments but Mandela if you can give the police time to investigate rather than criticise them hopefully they will find and disiplin the ignorant people who carried out this terrible attack… My regards and symphaty to the victim i wish you a quick and well recovery
