The alleged assault happened on the English Bridge at about 2.45am on Saturday.
One of the victims has been released from hospital following treatment, police said today.
The other man remains in hospital. His injuries are not believed life-threatening.
Detectives investigating the incident sealed off the English Bridge – one of the main routes into the town centre – for nearly seven hours on Saturday.
They arrested a man on suspicion of assault following the incident. Police today said he had been interviewed and released on bail pending further inquiries.
Police spokeswoman Maria Hawkaluk said: “If anyone was in the area at this time and saw or heard anything which may be connected, we would ask them to please get in touch.”
Council contractors were called to the English Bridge on Saturday morning to clean blood from the footpaths and road.
It is thought that a fight started at the bottom of the steps next to the English Bridge, which lead to the riverside path.
A trail of blood led up the steps, on to the English Bridge, along the bottom of Wyle Cop and up Town Walls.
Police today refused to say whether they had recovered the blood-stained item officers were searching for on Saturday.
