Cheers for championships

Members of the Rumblebees team take to the floor during the competition  More than 3,000 competitors from across the world are arriving in Shropshire to take part in Europe’s biggest cheerleading event.

The 18th annual British Cheerleading Association’s British and International Championships opened today at The International Centre, Telford, and continues until Sunday.

Members of the Bridgnorth Tigers team are set to perform tomorrow.

Bob Kiralfy, BCA chairman, said the association was expecting to welcome 244 teams, with entrants from as far afield as Ontario in Canada.

“We have moved the championships to Telford to accommodate the continued growth of the event,” he said.

“Nothing else this side of the Atlantic remotely approaches the scale and support of this unique championships, where daily attendances last year topped 4,600.

“There will be exciting non-stop athletic action, with more than 400 competitive routines scheduled over the three days.”
