Burglars broke into a derelict tower block in Telford and stole copper piping and cylinders in a £40,000 raid, damaging doors in the process.Burglars raided the Manor Heights block of flats in Hadley.

A £1,000 reward was today put forward for information about the burglary at the Wrekin Housing Trust property. It is one of a series of copper thefts, which has also seen the new Severn Hospice at Apley Castle targeted.

The latest break-in happened between early on June 30 and 9am on July 9, but police have only just released details.

The cost of the raid in items stolen and damage caused is estimated to be about £40,000.

Telford police spokesman Chris Ammonds said: “Thieves appear to have entered the property in Haybridge Road via a first floor window and then forced their way into a large number of the flats inside the building.

“Extensive damage has been caused to doors throughout the property as they then attempted to gain entry to each individual flat.

“It appears that, having entered each flat, thieves stole a quantity of copper piping and copper cylinders and in all, the estimated total of damage caused and items stolen is believed to be as much as £40,000.

“Police are keen to hear from anyone who believes they may have information regarding this burglary and a reward of £1,000 is on offer to anyone who provides information that leads to a conviction.”

The trust said it was working closely with the police on the investigation.

These flats should NEVER have been left empty for so many years. They are a disgrace to the Wrekin Housing Trust.
