Blaze a massive story

Inferno - flames leap above the roof of the burning building in Snedshill, Telford, yesterdayThe last few days has once again seen the spotlight fall on Shropshire, writes our Video Blogger James Shaw. The clean up from the floods, the arrest of a former local doctor in the terror case . . . the list goes on.

But for me, one of the most striking events happened right on our doorstep - and there wasn’t a national story in sight.

The fire at the old Lilleshall Company site on Snedshill was a massive story for people who live in the surrounding area, and perhaps those who left have Telford (or East Shropshire) in the last few years.

I am told the flames were visible from miles around (although I didn’t see them on my route home through town) and were a cause for many locals to gather.

My video on the fire was actually filmed the day after - clearly, as I didn’t see the flames - but the devastation was still there for all to see.

Like many people, I still remember the days that much of Oakengates was a hive of industrial activity, or in later years, a mass of empty factories.

Thankfully, the site is being redeveloped as a DIY store - although one nagging question still remains. If the factories that produced the wealth are being replaced by shops in which to spend it, where will that wealth come from? Answers on an email please!
