One satisfied convert

matts-mgf-18.jpgI’ve owned my MGF 1.8i Convertible for four years and in that time I’ve had few causes for complaint, writes Matt from Broseley.

It’s a great ‘value for money’ sports car, not super quick, but the 1.8i engine combined with its relative lightness means it’s certainly quick enough when you need it.

The handling is really quite superb, you can throw it around corners and it sticks well, great for bombing around Shropshire’s country lanes.

You also have the added bonus that it’s a convertible which makes all the difference on those few sunny days we have and turns driving into a real pleasure.

Traditionally, the MGF has been disparaged due to its lack of reliability and propensity for certain parts to fail, the cooling system in particular.

This may have been true of the earlier models but I’ve only known two minor parts to go in four years and considering the car is seven years old now, that’s really quite reasonable.

However with the demise of Rover the availability of parts will no doubt become an issue. This is the saddest part.

The MGF when it was first released marked a successful return of the MG brand and harked back to the days of the traditional British sports car.

But now that MG Rover has the gone the way of so many other great British manufacturing institutions, the MGF is consigned to history.

I just hope in 30 years time there will still be a few lovingly maintained MGF’s on the roads, and maybe I’ll even still have mine!

What a load od absoloute tosh. The new MG TF 2s will start rolling off the Longbridge production line in a couple of months time (NAC have already started making the old TF in China) and X Part is more than capable of supplying spare parts for the forseeable future.
Go and read the posts on the mg-rover forum (which any self respecting MG fan should be supporting) and you might be surprised at developments. MG Rover HAS the gone the way of so many other great British manufacturing institutions, but the MG brand is certainly not consigned to the history books, the saddest part is that it has taken Chinese money to save it.

Parts will not be a problem at all. The fact that MG will soon re-start production of the TF and the MG7 (formerly the MG ZT) and that there will be a new model comming out within the next five years certainly does not signal the demise of MG. Longbridge will soon re-start production of the TF and there are plans to build the MG7 there too, as well as the Nanjing plant opening for the Asian market.

Further, last year the new owners signed an Agreement with X-Parts to supply parts for all MG Rover vehicles.

And one last note of interest for those who are worried about the availability of spares for older cars. MG Rover has the most passionate and committed bunch of enthusiasts of any marque, where parts and expertise is widely avaliable for all cars. I even know of one company round here that is still producing exhaust system dampers for Austin Allegros.

MG Rover has not been British owned for some time! So now China are in the driving seat No big deal. Spares via xpart apear to be ok Longbridge are to start making the MG again. I think The Government are more of as problem by letting all our manufacturing industries down. And now they want to price me and my ZTT off the road.

My MG MGF has been written off following a minor shunt - driver door and wheel arch - mainly because the parts are hard to get hold of.

Only had it for 2 weeks!
