hanwood.jpg1. Head to the staggered crossroads on the B4386 to the north of Cruckton. Walk down the lane towards Cruckton and pass through the village with the hall on the right and the church on the left.

2. Bear right down the hill, cross Cruckton Bridge over the Rea Brook, and cross over the stile in the hedge on the left opposite a white gate.

3. Walk across the field as indicated, continue alongside a hedge on the right and behind a school to a stile. Cross over turn left and right around the football field, and continue ahead to join a surfaced path alongside the Rea Brook which passes under the railway and leads out onto the main road through Hanwood village.

4. Cross over to the road opposite and follow it to a stile at the end; cross over this and walk ahead across the field to rejoin the Rea Brook as far as a footbridge on the left.

Cross over and follow the winding path out onto the road next to the church. Turn right and continue as far as the White House; cross over and walk down the road opposite to a crossing over the railway.

6. On the other side of the track walk up the right-hand boundary of two fields to a stile on the right at the top, cross over this and follow the boundary to another stile.

7. Turn left down the hill and where the hedge finishes continue in the same direction to a gate in the bottom corner. Pass through this, pass the pond and through another gate. Walk alongside a left-hand boundary to a bridle gate leading into an enclosed track known as Thieves Lane and shown on maps as a Roman road.

At its junction with the B4386 turn left and return to the start.
