Welshpool

Distance: Three miles.
Terrain: Easy walking, mostly along canal towpath and through parkland.

welshpool.jpg1. Start at the Tourist Information Centre on the main car park in Welshpool. Cross over to the footpath opposite and turn left along what was once the trackbed of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway in the days when it was collected to the main line.

2. Cross over the bridge, turn right down the steps and left on to the towpath of the Montgomery Canal.

Continue under a road bridge to pass the Powysland Museum complex and follow the towpath for about a mile.

3. When the canal turns sharp right on its new course under the main road, carry on ahead alongside the now abandoned section to a gate.

4. Turn right along the road, cross the canal and continue to the junction with the lane leading to Powis Castle.

5.

Then turn left up the hill and take either of the entrances into the grounds of the castle. Please note: Dogs are not allowed in the park.

The first entrance will take you below the castle and its terraced gardens whilst the second — the main vehicle exit — passes behind and close to the impressive medieval building.

Both routes join up at a junction, with a third drive which can be followed down through the deer park and into the centre of Welshpool.

6. Turn right down the High Street, left at the traffic lights and right on to the car park.
