Scores of loyal Shrewsbury Town fans are today the proud owners of part of the club’s history after snapping up memorabilia at Gay Meadow’s final public event.
More than 215 items from the club’s 97 years at the famous riverside ground went under the hammer yesterday at an auction run by McCartney’s.
Nearly 1,000 Shrewsbury Town fans headed to the riverside ground for one last time to bid for lots ranging from signs and dugouts to the balls used at the last ever game against MK Dons last month.
Supporters forked out thousands of pounds to get their own Gay Meadow memento at the three-hour long event, held pitchside.
The club will use the takings to help with the ongoing work at its new home, the impressive £15 million New Meadow in Oteley Road where it will kick off the 2007/8 season.
The boardroom table was bought by a private bidder for £2,000, while several signs fetched more than £250.
However the biggest sale of the day was a turnstile dating back to 1884, which was bought by Shropshire Homes boss Howard Thorne for £3,050.
Town chief executive Steve Wellbeloved said: “It was a very good turnout. We had more than 300 registered bidders and plenty more inside the ground.”

Considering the place was derelict, I am amazed. I suppose there is always the kitsch value although there’s no accounting for taste.
Avid supporters of the Shrews obviously cherish the Gay Meadow whether it is derelict or not and it is up to them what they spend their cash on. What would you fetch for scrap?
Everywhere I look Mr Peasbody has a comment. Get a life will you for God sake.
Why don’t you sign in as “annoying little man” instead of your name, we would all still know who you were.
Yeah and proof in your name shows that peasbody!
Your dead right - there is no accounting for taste, so stop fly tipping and keep your garbage to yourself.
