Queen’s Head

1. The parking area for this walk is opposite the Queen’s Head, between the new A5 and its predecessor. Turn left up the hill past the Queen’s Head pub, and then right at the road junction towards Whittington.

2. After about 100 yards, cross a stile on the right and walk down the bottom left-hand corner and cross another stile.

Bear half-left up the field, making for the lone telegraph pole and, after passing this, continue to a stile in the opposite hedge which leads out onto a lane.

3. Turn left and then right at the junction, and follow the lane past a cottage and onto a grassy track which ends at a gate.

Cross the stile ahead and follow the left-hand boundary to a pair of stiles leading into a field, in which walk half-right to a stile leading onto the railway lines.

4. Cross over then cross another stile and pass through a small wood and into a long field.

Continue along the left-hand boundary of this to a stile and, after crossing this, turn right and cross another one which leads onto the towpath of a recently restored section of the Montgomery Canal, which once linked Newtown and Welshpool with the Shropshire Union canal at Welsh Frankton.

5. Turn right along the towpath and go back to Queen’s Head.

6. It is necessary to cross over the canal by the bridge numbered 74, from where the towpath follows the left-hand side of the canal back to the start.
