Car club party to help appeal

flying_doc_circle.gifShropshire classic car enthusiasts will be raising cash for the Shropshire Star’s Flying Doctor Appeal when they hold a birthday bash next week.

More than 100 classic cars are likely to turn out at the event held by Shropshire Classics. “It’s our 14th birthday night and it will be on June 20 at Bicton Social Club starting at 7.30pm,” said committee member Roy Pilsbury.

Enthusiasts are invited to take along their prized motors to the get-together.

“Last year we had 122 cars there,” said Roy who, as it happens, does not himself have a classic car.

“I just go along and enjoy it. It’s just a get-together - a nostalgia night, more than anything. We always have a raffle and a tombola and the secretary has agreed that half of the raffle proceeds will go towards the Flying Doctor Appeal.”

The group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at the Bicton Social Club.

Meanwhile Dovaston (with Wilcot) United Reformed Church, which has for the past few years held a “fun day weekend” with proceeds shared with a charity, has adopted our appeal as its charity this year.

There will be a fun day at the Manse Field at Dovaston, near Kinnerley, on June 30, starting at 2pm, which will include a flower, fruit, vegetables, craft and cookery show, including children’s sections.

Other attractions include music, classic and vintage cars, vintage farm vehicles and machinery, a sheep shearing demonstration, fancy dress, and a “mad about hats” parade.

Sunday, July 1, sees an open air pet service on the Manse Field at 11am, and at 4.30pm there is a proms, praise and picnic event with the Wem Silver Jubilee Band.
