Halford

Distance: Four miles.
Terrain: Field and woodland paths with a quiet lane at the beginning.

halford.jpg1. Start by the post box on the road junction at the entrance to Halford village, north of the B4368 north-east of Craven Arms.

From the road junction take the lane to the secluded hamlet of Lower Dinchope.

2. At the junction of lanes there turn left towards Westhope until the lane bears left to another T-junction.

3. On the hill to your right you can see the remains of a tower known as Flounder’s Folly, which is currently being restored. The track off to the right by a parking area will lead the energetic to the top.

4. Turn left at the junction and follow the “Hills and Dales Hike” marker posts for the rest of the walk as follows.

5.

Follow the lane to its junction with a track and turn left up this until it reaches Strefford Wood. Then turn left along a grassy track running alongside the wood.

6. Then bear right as indicated down a path through the trees until reaching a set of steps on the left. Climb these and follow the path along the edge of the wood until emerging into a clearing.

8. Turn right down to the lane and turn right along it before bearing right off it to enter Berrymill Wood. Again, follow the path just inside the wood until reaching a stile leading into a field.

9. Pass down the right-hand side of this field and the next one until reaching another stile. Cross over this and walk down the left-hand side of the next field and cross further stile.

10. Turn left on to the lane and walk through the village of Halford, passing the church on the right, back to the start.

Did this walk last weekend - could not find the set of steps described in para 6. Para 8 should read ‘turn right down to the lane & then turn LEFT.

If you go right you end up at a Ford.

There are some steps going into Berrymill Wood. Other than this instructions are correct & the walk was very pleasant.
