Distance: Three-and-a-half miles.
Terrain: Easy walking on lanes, paths and canal towpath.
1. This walk starts at the canal basin at the end of Wharf Road in the centre of Ellesmere. Walk down the towpath on the right-hand side of the canal past the redundant dairy (now demolished) as far as its junction with the main canal and turn right towards Llangollen.
The interesting building on the far side was formerly the Shropshire Union Canal’s main offices and is now utilised by British Waterways.
2. Continue along the towpath as it meanders on the same contour across the countryside and under two bridges.
The third is known as Coachman’s Bridge and the road over it offers a short cut to Tetchill.
If following the full route continue along the towpath to the next bridge, turn right immediately after it to a stile and turn right over the canal on a broad grassy track.
3. Continue along this, ignoring a fork to the right, until it emerges on to a lane alongside farm buildings at the edge of the village of Tetchill. Turn right and at the T-junction continue ahead through the village towards Ellesmere.
4. Carry on along the lane past the entrance to Ellesmere College on the right and on the outskirts of the town cross the canal bridge and turn left immediately down on to the towpath.
5. Continue ahead alongside the canal, cross over the footbridge and turn right alongside the moored boats to return to the start.
