Car tax dodgers targetted

More than 50 people face penalty tickets for having no road tax after a vehicle monitoring operation was carried out in the Cosford area, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) said today.Officials from the agency used an automatic number plate reader (ANPR) to scan about 5,600 vehicles heading towards Cosford Air Show yesterday.

David Whitbread, from DVLA, said the team recorded a potential 53 “hits” - motorists possibly driving without vehicle tax - during the operation. DVLA staff were parked in a layby beside the A41 from 8am to 1pm.

Mr Whitbread said: “The operation was done in conjunction with the police. They weren’t stopping vehicles. If they do another operation that might happen in the future.”

He said the number of vehicles identified as having no excise duty was below the 1.25 per cent ratio usually achieved.

Mr Whitbread said: “An image has been captured of the vehicle, then that image is going to be double-checked against DVLA records to check it’s still unlicensed.

“If so, a penalty notice will be sent out to the keeper of the vehicle.

“If they refuse to pay they could face court action.”

The DVLA vehicle was parked in the lay-by between the M54 island at Junction 3 and the entrance to Cosford.

The DVLA already runs television campaigns warning drivers they no longer need to see tax discs but can simply check on the computer system to see if a vehicle is taxed or declared as being off the road.
