Car crime drops at retail park

cctv.jpgNew CCTV and warning signs on a Shrewsbury retail park have led to a drop in vehicle crime, a safety group has claimed. Crime prevention measures were put in place at Meole Brace Retail Park.

Shrewsbury Community Safety Partnership recently helped install new cameras and signposts advising drivers to lock their vehicles.

Partnership chairman, Councillor Miles Kenny, announced at the committee’s latest meeting that the crime prevention measures taken had greatly reduced vehicle crime and incidents of criminal damage near the shops.

Mr Kenny said: “We have introduced warning signs advising motorists to secure their vehicle and to take care of any valuables within their vehicles.

“We also took certain CCTV measures and have since noticed that crime has significantly reduced.

“The committee is committed to taking action that will help the community to enjoy a relatively crime free life and our ongoing measures will see efforts concentrate on crime in business enterprise parks and local communities.

“The Shopwatch and Pubwatch schemes have been expanded to include additional areas, and we are constantly looking at ways to reduce criminal damage, anti-social behaviour and domestic violence.

“A lot of the work we do is naturally confidential, but I can assure people that our ongoing Crime Reduction Plan will be profiling both offences and offenders to ensure a successful outcome.”

The Shrewsbury Shopwatch and Pubwatch schemes are partnerships between shops, pubs and a host of other groups and individuals committed to stopping crime and anti-social behaviour.
