Whiggas with attitude

alig.jpgIt was probably the Teddy Boys of the 1960s who introduced the first fashion fad for young people, writes teen blogger Rhian..

Since then, there have been the Mods and skinheads and perhaps the best known of all - the Punk Rockers.

These days though, we’ve got a real mixture. There are Goths, Moshers, Emos, Skaters, Grebs and Chavs, all with their separate identies, dress codes and musical tastes.

It would take too long to try and explain them all, but for anyone who is interested, definitions can be got from www.urbandictionary.com

Whats become a ground breaking variation of the whole youth music and fashion scene though, and typical of teenagers breaking new taboos, is the ‘whigga’.

Ali G might have had something to do with it, but whiggas are white kids also known as chavs who copy the language of black American rap artists and combine it with Jamaican accents and slang terms, and then go around greeting each other with stuff like “hey, homey” and “innit” except that, since they’re not black rap artists, they’ve become known as ‘whiggas’.

I don’t think I should try and explain that futher because what the equality and diversity police must think of it - I don’t know, but that’s 21st century Britain for you.

Hmm, that info is well out of date

Goths & Moshers have both been around since the early 80s

Anthrax were the most influential band for the moshers back then, and Sisters of Mercy, The Cult & The Cure had a big Goth following about the same era.

I was one of them Stage Diving Moshers / Thrash Metal fans back then, and come to think of it, still am a Thrash Metal /Death Metal / Black Metal / Viking Metal fan.

Don’t do any moshing these days though, haha, prefer to actually watch the bands now.

‘Whigga’s’ are also to a certain extent responsible for the gang culture of today!

Apart from being utterly ridiculous, its quite sad to see children walking around with false identities. Certain comedy programmes such as The Catherine Tate Show and Little Britain, whilst taking the mickey out of an already existing situtaion, has just highlighted it even more.

Children nowadays need to learn that having your own identity and style is far more worthwhile than copying the crowd.

The Skinheads were a great time, early seventies, but they soon grew their hair because of pressure at work, but they still wore the traditional docs etc and renamed themselves Boot boys, and it was only a very short time that the national front got involved with skinheads, the vast majority of skins were good people who loved the music, starting with Ska, northern soul motown, then slade, its when punks come on the scene that the nazi skinheads gave the skins a very bad name, but thank god skinheads are now in the past, you dont even see any with the British national party.

You are missing the point. You don’t acquire a identity, but merely consume one. Therefore identities are figments in our imagination which promote ideas of liberation and freedom which is ironic really. Because when you consume these identities you are merely stengthening the capitalist system and any ideas of rebellion is laughable.
