Disabled man hurt in robbery

A disabled man in his 20s was left with fractured cheekbones after being badly beaten and robbed of his mobile phone as he walked along a Shrewsbury alleyway.

The offender also threatened to slit the victim’s throat.

The victim, who walks with a limp, was attacked in the alleyway leading from shops in Ditherington Road to Darville in Castlefields between 1.45am and 1.55am yesterday.

Detective Constable Kate Hughes, of Shrewsbury CID, said: “This man was clearly willing to use extreme violence to get the victim’s mobile phone and a small amount of cash.

“He began by shouting abuse from the entrance to the alley as the victim walked past. The victim then felt something hit the back of his head when he was a few metres into the alleyway, before the offender attacked him.

“He was punched and kicked in a sustained assault. The offender then took the victim’s mobile phone and some coins and the victim managed to get away.”

Detective constable Hughes appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time to contact police.

The offender was white, in his early 20s, about 5ft 8in tall and of medium build, with light hair. He was wearing a light baseball cap and a dark tracksuit.

Witnesses can contact Shrewsbury CID on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
