Festival hits high notes

Enthusiasts of classical music will be hitting the top notes during one of the highlights of the Shropshire and mid-Wales calendar, the Llanfyllin Festival.

And this year organisers are optimistic that the showpiece event will eclipse even last year’s outstanding festival which celebrated the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth and the centenary of the birth of Shostakovich.

Spread over four dates - June 8, 10, 29 and July 1 - the music will embrace 18th to 20th Centuries, with compositions by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven, Bartok, Neilson and Szymanovsky, who died in 1937.

The programme will include Schubert E flat Quartet, Beethoven Quartet Opus 18 No 4, Beethoven Quartet Opus 12 No 7, Schubert Octet Opus 166 in F major, Haydn Quartet Opus 76 No 1, Haydn Quartet Opus 20 No 6 and Szymanovsky Quartet No 2.

Llanfyllin regulars the Allegri String Quartet and friends are again providing the balanced and varied programme at each of the concerts staged at St Myllin’s Parish Church, with clarinet player James Campbell taking part on the first of the show series.

Organiser Terry Postings, chairman of Llanfyllin Music Festival, said: “We welcome the Allegri Quartet to this year’s festival and are delighted they will be joined by our old friend James Campbell and several other colleagues.

“We always enjoy welcoming familiar faces and meeting new musicians.”

He said beating last year’s success would be a tall order but was confident it could be done. And Mr Postings added that there would be something for everyone at the series of shows and that music would not be the only highlight.

“In addition to the pleasures of music, why not enjoy the delights of this area’s outstanding natural beauty?” he said.

The scenery in the area, he said, is unsurpassed and is a mecca for walking as well as providing a host of places of historic interest for people who might be less energetic.

Tickets range in price from £5 for students, £11 for people who qualify for concessions and £12 full price.

Music enthusiasts can take advantage of a special concession ticket for all four shows at £40 if the concerts are booked at the same time. Llanfyllin is situated on A490 north-west of Welshpool.
