Major change for parking

carpark22.jpgA Shropshire town centre is set for a major overhaul after the county’s new parking attendants claimed regulations on the main shopping street were outdated.

Bus stops could be moved, disabled spaces rearranged and loading bays changed under the proposals for Bridgnorth. The plan follows a review of parking in the town by ParkRight managers.

Sandy Harper, of ParkRight, which oversees parking in Shropshire, said the scheme had come about as a direct result of having parking attendants regularly patrolling the streets.

He said: “With us having parking teams on the street every day, which we have never had in Bridgnorth before, we are getting enormous amounts of feedback about what is going on.

“Having being going for six months we have gathered a lot of information, and are finding there are problems with things like loading bays and disabled spaces in the wrong place.

“They were put in place many years ago and the High Street has changed a lot since then.”

Mr Harper said the changes would not come in for another six months or so, but he hoped they would improve the town centre.

He added: “We are looking at improving the disabled parking provision which is not very good in the High Street.

“We are looking at improving the loading provision, and possibly relocating the bus stops.

“There is a lot of work to be done and it has still got to be planned and costed.

“I think a lot of people will be happy to see these improvements. It is one of the positive things to have come out of the new enforcement, that we are picking up on anomalies like this.”

Bridgnorth High Street has long been regarded as a bottleneck for drivers and often sees queues of traffic at all times of day.

Town councillor, Brian Jones, applauded the proposals and said he hoped they would make the town centre easier to negotiate for drivers and pedestrians.

“I think it is a good idea,” he said. “The loading bays need changing and there are two spaces for doctors outside the old surgery which should be disabled bays.

“Providing it is planned out carefully it will make things better I’m sure.”
