Moss back to boost Town squad

logo_shrews.gifDarren Moss today returned to Shrewsbury Town as manager Gary Peters began a dramatic day of summer switches.

Moss, who signed for Crewe in a £170,000 move from Town in March 2005, will be back with his former club after agreeing a two-year deal with the play-off finalists.

The full-back, who turned 26 last week, made 140 appearances in his initial four-year stint at Shrewsbury after moving from Chester.

The lure of joining Dario Gradi’s Crewe in the Championship proved too much but, after a spell which included the Railwaymen’s relegation to League One, Moss has now agreed to return to Shrewsbury.

“Darren has played a lot of games for Crewe at right-back, right-sided centre half and, for the last few months, at left-back,” said Peters.

“It was made clear to me a couple of months ago that he was on a Bosman and was keen to re-join us and it’s moved on from there.

“I didn’t want him to leave last time but he was out of contract a couple of months later and we were aware of interest. Crewe were prepared to put up £170,000 to get him and we had to take it.

Better

“The fact he is out of contact at Crewe now means we have sold him for £170,000 and brought him back for nothing.

“Darren has made a lot of the running on this and it’s nice when that happens with good players.

“I think there is still more to come from Darren - we can make him a better player here and Darren believes that as well.”

Moss joins Northampton midfielder David Hunt in being the first summer additions - with Peters hopeful of adding up to three more new faces within the next 24 hours.

The glut of additions is likely to coincide with some departures with Peters due to meet his entire squad individually today and reveal his retained list for those out of contract.

Town assistant John McMahon and club secretary John Howarth will work on the club’s pre-season fixture list over the coming days.

Uncertainty over which division Town will be in as well as capacity limits for early games played at the New Meadow until a full safety certificate has been issued have led to a delay in the final arranging of the summer programme.

No date has yet been fixed for the Manchester City game which as agreed as part of the Joe Hart deal, while Town are hopeful of finalising a home game at their new stadium with Coventry and, potentially, Stoke.
