Midfield ace Fitz stays at Bucks

Rob SmithMidfielder Gary Fitzpatrick has agreed non-contract terms to remain at AFC Telford United for their first season in the Blue Square Northern.

The experienced 35-year-old reached agreement with boss Rob Smith over the Bank Holiday weekend and becomes the 17th player to commit his future to the side.

It leaves Steve Palmer as the only member of last season’s promotion-winning squad still waiting to learn if he will be retained.

“Fitzpatrick was brought along as a short-term thing, with not much view to next season, but he’s impressed that much and his fitness levels are unbelievable,” said Smith. ”We’d be foolhardy to let him go.

“He adapted very well after he came in and looked like he’d been with us all season. He’ll have his work cut out to get in the side because we’ll have a strong midfield, but I think he’ll play a part.”

On Palmer, he added: “Palms has been away so we haven’t had the chance to speak to him yet, but we’ll be doing that in the next few days.”

Smith is also holding talks with two potential signings tonight, though he is not expecting a quick decision.

“I doubt I’ll get an answer tonight because it is the first time I’ve met either of them,” he said. “In ideal world I’d like to sign them both.”
