Reports on man waving gun

armed.jpgArmed police were called to a supermarket near the south Shropshire border, after witnesses reported seeing a man waving what appeared to be a handgun.

Members of the public who witnessed the incident said the Somerfield store in Leominster had to be evacuated during the incident, which happened at about 9am on Saturday.

Officers called to the scene arrested a man, but no firearms were found by the police.

The first officers called to the store stood watch while they waited for armed colleagues to arrive. A spokeswoman for West Mercia police said: “Local officers attended the area and spoke to a member of the public that had called police and an area search was carried out.”

The spokeswoman added: “A further call was received 20 minutes later, stating a male was waving what appeared to be a handgun around.

“Officers visually contained the area, whilst specialist armed response police officers were deployed.

“The male was seen to enter Somerfield, where he was detained.

“An extensive search did not recover a weapon, but there are suggestions that it may have been an innocent article.”

Nobody from the Somerfield store would comment on the incident and nobody from the company’s head office was available for comment.

Any person waving any handgun should be given three warnings to put it down and if they don’t cops should then shoot on site !!
