Centre finally due to open

A new centre for disabled and disadvantaged people in Bridgnorth which has been plagued by problems is due to finally open next week.

The centre, in Station Lane, has been attacked by vandals three times and was hit by floods yesterday as staff tried to get it ready for opening.

Managers at Beacon Employment, which runs the centre, hoped to open at the end of March but a series of incidents pushed the development back.

The centre caused controversy when district councillors gave it planning permission because some residents thought it would attract drug users to the area.

But Sandy Beech, of the charity, said: “We have zero tolerance against drugs and are moving in there to help the community.

“As long as we don’t get any more problems we will be opening next week.”

The centre will provide practical education for disabled people and those who find it difficult to stay in long-term employment.
