New Shropshire captain Tim Hancock believes his young guns have the ingredients to challenge for Minor Counties success this summer.Hancock enjoyed a winning start to his reign when his side defeated Herefordshire by 31 runs at Kington yesterday in the opening game of the round-robin stages of the MCCA Trophy.
Shropshire managed just 197 with the bat, but fought back impressively in the field to clinch a comfortable victory.
And Hancock believes there were encouraging signs for the future.
“It was good to win the game and there were plenty of positives to take from it,” he said. “Alex Huxley and Jono Whitney batted very well and then Andy Gray and Matt Tilt showed a lot of bottle after we lost a few wickets.
“I thought 220 would have been a good par score and we just need to be a bit greedier and go on to make big partnerships when we have two batsman well set. But that’s a mental thing more than anything else and there is no doubt we have the ability, skills and technique to do well.
“We have a raft of good young players who are very enthusiastic and committed to doing well.”
The victory puts Shropshire joint top of the five-team group A with Northumberland, who defeated Cumberland by 21 runs.
