Let’s go for glory, urges Peters

Gary Peters celebrates Shrewsbury's victoryShrewsbury Town boss Gary Peters will send his side gunning for victory against Grimsby on Saturday - despite requiring just one point to secure their play-off position.

Saturday’s tense 1-0 success over Hereford at Edgar Street put Town on the brink of a place in the Football League play-offs for the first time since their introduction in 1987.

Results elsewhere prevented Shrewsbury guaranteeing a top seven slot with one game remaining, with Bristol Rovers defeating Swindon and Stockport earning a point against Bury.

Town, however, remain firmly in the box seat and now only a home defeat for themselves, coupled with victories for Rovers at title-chasing Hartlepool and Stockport at Darlington, will see them miss out on their shot at promotion on the final day.

But Peters has pledged to push for all three points, rather than simply attempting to secure the draw which would extend their season.

“We have go for the win - if you play for a draw and the opposition score in the last few minutes then you can’t do anything about it,” said Peters.

“If we win the game it means we will definitely be in sixth place and it will give us a chance of getting above Lincoln and into fifth.

“The only way we can’t get to the play-offs is if we lose and the other two win.

“If it’s going to happen it will happen in football and we have to do the right things to make sure it doesn’t occur.”

Peters was delighted with his side’s Edgar Street victory on Saturday - and admitted he was on the brink of a tactical change just before Stewart Drummond’s priceless goal on the stroke of half-time.

“I thought we were solid and it was a game we had to win to keep it in our hands,” added the Town boss.

“We had a game plan to make sure we didn’t give anything away in the first half and then assess it at half-time.

“We would have had to have gone for it but when Drumms scored it as just a case of keeping it nice and tight.”

Shrewsbury reserves are in action tonight when West Bromwich Albion visit Gay Meadow (7pm).

The team will be made up of a host of trialists, although Peters is considering run-outs for Michael Symes, Steve Leslie, Chris Humphrey and Michael Jones.

Various supporters groups will be issuing their Player of the Year awards at Gay Meadow tomorrow night.

Door will open at 7pm with the presentations getting underway one hour later. Tickets are £5 with a buffet or £2 for admission only and are available from the reception at Gay Meadow.

How the play-off picture may unfold:

Shrewsbury will have to play a waiting game before learning when their date with play-off destiny will be - should they finish in the top seven of League Two.

Football League officials today revealed dates for the two-legged semi-finals will not be confirmed until after the last games of the regular season on Saturday.

Provisional dates for the League Two schedule, however, have been made which will see the first legs on Saturday May 12 (5.15pm) and Monday May 14 (7.45pm).

The returns would then be played on Thursday May 17 and Friday May 18, both at 7.45pm. The final is at Wembley on Saturday May 26.
