Titanic test for crew in drama

It certainly won’t be a sinking ship when the Shropshire premiere of Titanic the Musical, based on the true story of the ill-fated liner’s maiden voyage, is staged later this month.

The spectacular version of the Broadway smash hit opens at The Place at Oakengates for a five-day run beginning on Tuesday, April 24.

A cast of 60 members of Telford and District Light Operatic Players have been rehearsing for 12 months for the show which promises to take theatre-goers on a rollercoaster journey of emotions.

The production has cost a staggering £25,000 to put on, with the stage set has specially designed and constructed by a member of the company, and costumes have been made and supplied locally.

The musical features a 14-piece orchestra and three dogs.

When the Players take to the stage at the end of the month it will be just over 95 years since the great ship went to its watery grave.

The Titanic, said to be unsinkable, went down on its maiden voyage from Southampton after hitting an iceberg on April 15, 1912.

Some 1,500 passengers lost their lives in the tragedy.

Prior to the version of the show being staged in Shropshire, Titanic the Musical has thrilled audiences on Broadway, opening to packed houses and being greeted with glittering reviews.

The musical version has continued to capture the hearts and minds and has come to be appreciated not only as a piece of real-life history but also a significant part of the history of musical theatre.

On Broadway the show has been showered with five prestigious Tony Music Awards - including one for best musical.

The premiere evening is on Tuesday, April 24, when a red carpet pre-show drinks reception will be held at 6.45pm. The curtain will go up at 7.30pm.

The premiere will be attended and opened by the Mayor of Telford, councillor Malcolm Smith, and Mrs Christine Smith along with a number of other local dignitaries and special guests.

Performances will be held at 7.30pm on each day of the run and a special matinee on the final Saturday will be staged at 2.30pm.

Tickets prices range from £10 to £14.
