Revamp of centre a step closer

Multi-million pound plans to regenerate a Telford district centre were a step closer today after winning approval from councillors.Members of Telford & Wrekin Council’s plans board backed proposals aimed at breathing new life into Madeley centre.

The scheme would bring a new Tesco supermarket offering 280 jobs as well as 15 shops, 16 flats and hundreds of parking spaces. Yesterday, councillors agreed to send the plans to the next stage.

Because of their scale, they must be approved by the council’s strategic plans board and the Government Office for the West Midlands.

Sean Coghlan, lead planning officer for the project, said that if the plans were accepted work could begin in the autumn.

The proposals, from developer Durward Kingsley Estates, also include demolition of the former Webster Wilkinson factory, creation a new road from High Street to Park Avenue and new access to the library.

Some concern has been expressed by Madeley Parish Council that the designs are not satisfactory for the “important and historic site”.

There was also concern about traffic and disturbance during the work.
