Man hit by car left critically ill

A man in his 30s was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries after he was hit by a car, which then failed to stop in a village near Oswestry.

Police are investigating what they say was a “public order incident” in Station Road, Whittington, last night and are appealing for witnesses. The injured man, identified as Paul Jones, 39, of Whittington, is being treated at Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said Mr Jones was in a “critical but stable” condition today.  He underwent surgery last night for serious leg injuries.

Land ambulance crews, the County Air Ambulance from Cosford and police officers were all called to the scene of the incident yesterday.

The air ambulance landed on the playing fields at Whittington Primary School. Paramedics gave the victim emergency treatment before flying him to hospital.

Shropshire police spokesman Richard Ewels said: “Police are today appealing for witnesses to an incident in Station Road, Whittington, at about 5.50pm last night.

“A man was involved in a collision with a vehicle during a public order incident.

“The man, believed to be in his 30s, was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham with serious leg injuries and underwent surgery last night.”

He added: “The car involved, thought to be a red Renault Clio, containing several people, failed to stop.

“A police investigation has been launched and an appeal made for anyone who witnessed the incident or the circumstances leading up to to it to contact Oswestry Police.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said the incident involved a pedestrian and a car in Station Road, near to the community centre in the village.

The ambulance spokesman said: “A man in his 30s was treated at the scene for a serious lower leg injury.

“His condition was stabilised before he was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital by the County Air Ambulance.”

Mr Ewels said police were still trying to establish exactly what had happened.
