A “Buffs” lodge in Telford has raised over £2,000 by various fundraising activities which it is to donate to the Shropshire Star’s Flying Doctor Appeal.
The £2,100 raised by the Severn Lodge, of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, is being presented to air ambulance coordinators Gina and Tony Constable at a special handing over ceremony on April 18.
“We raised it through raffles, bonus balls, tombolas - all sorts of things - over 12 months,” said lodge secretary Peter Walker.
“We have given a lot of money to the air ambulance over the years and we thought it would be a good idea, because it’s a new thing getting off the ground, to give it to the Flying Doctor Appeal.
“We always raise between £2,000 and £3,000 every year.”
The group meets at the Barley Mow pub in Court Street, Madeley, between noon and 2pm on Sundays, and has roughly 18 members.
However the presentation on April 18, at 8pm, is at the nearby Anchor pub.
“The landlady there, Yvonne Lion, hasn’t got a room big enough to have us there, but she raises a lot of money for us,” said Mr Walker.
Among other fundraising contributions also in the pipeline is £106 from the Wattlesborough Village Hall whist drive group, and Gina and Tony are shortly to go pick up that donation too.
Meanwhile, an Oswestry restaurant is holding a “Simla Special” night to raise cash for the appeal.
The event at the Simla restaurant is on May 24 and diners are being invited - if they wish - to dress in saris to make the occasion even more special.
Ticket cost of £25 includes an Indian meal and entertainment in the form of dancers.
The hope is that some Bhangra dancers will be performing.
Helping in the organisation of the event, which starts at 7 for 7.30pm, is Mrs Debbie Denny, who says that places are limited to about 90.
Tickets can be obtained from Seema on 0782 5524673, or by popping in to Debbie’s nail salon, Nail-It With Deb, in Willow Street, or phoning it on (01691) 680852.
