Title hopefuls sent packing

Childs Ercall and Newport grabbed sweet home wins over potential title-chasers on first night in the Furrows Shropshire Premier Bowls League. While reigning champions St Georges were blitzing visiting AWC 14-0 last night, the Ercall boys surprised north Shropshire rivals Chester Road 10-4 while Newport edged past mighty Castlefields 8-6.

Brian Shore was once again Childs Ercall’s standard bearer and, down at Newport, Martyn France made sure at the back for the Fishes by covering a super 21-2 win by Luke Jones.

Mid Shropshire champions Bylet marked their return to the top flight with a fine five point haul at Sir John Bayley, Neil Jones and Scott Harries both winning in the first four.

And three more winners in the back four made it a good night for the first club to regain a place in the Premier.

Donnington Wood and Meole Brace will also be happy to have got five points on their travels. Results:

Childs Ercall 10 (+27, B Shore 21-8), Chester Road 4 (A Moss 21-10); Ford 9 (+23, P Griffiths 21-9), Meole Brace 5 (M Thomas 21-10).

Ifton 9 (+22, G Davies 21-6), Donnington Wood 5 (F Watkins 21-10); Newport 8 (+15, M France 21-7), Castlefields 6 (L Jones 21-2).

St Georges 14 (+113, A Palin 21-4), Archibald Worthington 0 (A Smout 18); Sir John Bayley 9 (+26, P Grimston 21-7), Bylet (G Wale 21-12).

Why was there the need to say neutrals found the Ford/Meole Brace game a poor encounter?

I watched this game and it was anything but that. It was a well fought game which Ford just ran away with in the middle four after a good close first four. Meole responded well at the back with three comfortable wins.

Why not report the stats and not hearsay from unnamed spectators.

    Unneccessary comments.

Totally agree - I was on the first 4 and lost 21-20 to Wayne Phillips which was anything but a poor performance also Kev Jones lost 21-19 to Tony Hotchkiss another good game - the game was won in the middle four and perhaps peetered out in the back four but credit to the Meole team who battled back to get 5 winners whoever those unnamed spectators were perhaps they may wish to respond and say what exactly was poor about the ‘encounter’!!

What an unneccessary comment to print!!
Yet again the Shropshire Star lets itself down for Bowls stories.
All that i can assume is that the ‘neutral spectator’ must play bowls at an exceptionally high standard.
Well done to Ford & Meole for a hard fought encounter.
