Woman conned by bogus official

Bogus officials have targeted two pensioners’ homes in Telford - fleeing with a “substantial amount” of cash in one incident.

Police today urged residents to be vigilant after the incidents yesterday.

The first happened in Springhill Crescent, Madeley, at about 9.50am, when a man called claiming to be checking the water.

The occupier, a man in his late 60s, let the man in, but then called police as he felt unnerved by the visitor. Nothing was stolen

The man was in his 20s and wore black clothing.

A man in his 30s, claiming to be from the water board, called at the home of a woman in her 80s in Windsor Place, Dawley.

She let him into the kitchen, where he turned the taps on during the incident about 12.45pm.

It is believed he went into the bedroom as shortly after he had left, the occupant found drawers open and a substantial amount of money missing.

Police are investigating whether the two incidents are linked.

Sarah Warren, Telford Police spokeswoman, said: “Following these incidents, we are urging residents across Telford and Wrekin to be vigilant and keep bogus callers out.

“It is imperative that, before you admit someone into your home, you ask for proper identification.

“Genuine callers will not mind waiting while their credentials are checked,”

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call police on 08457 444888.
