Airlift for mountain teenager

A teenage student from Shrewsbury was airlifted to hospital after cutting open his knee when he fell down a mountain in north Wales.

The 17-year-old, who is believed to attend Shrewsbury College, suffered major cuts to his knee after he slipped and fell on Moel Siabod, south of Capel Curig, yesterday afternoon.

The teenager was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor by a helicopter from RAF Valley, Anglesey, after he was treated by Ogwen Valley mountain rescue.

Chris Lloyd, from the rescue team, said there were 10 students and one leader in the group, which had been camping in the area.

He said he believed the group was a team of sixth form students who had travelled to Wales from Shrewsbury College.

He said: “They were coming back down the mountain and this lad took a slip on a patch of steep shale.

“He sliced his knee open badly on the ground.”

Mr Lloyd said that the mountain rescue team was alerted and on the scene by 5.15pm.

“We were deployed onto the mountain and realised the severity of the injury.

“The RAF sent a helicopter and the team treated the lad for his injuries before he was taken to hospital in Bangor,” he added.

Mr Lloyd said the helicopter is used for military and maritime rescues, but was sent out at the discretion of the RAF.

No one from Shrewsbury College was available for comment this morning.
