Scout hut decision deferred

A bid to build a new scout and guide hut on a Shropshire housing estate have been deferred following a wave of objections from people living nearby.

Ludlow Town Council applied to South Shropshire District Council to develop a hut at Wheeler Road Playing Fields.

The scheme caused controversy among residents, who collected more than 400 signatures on a petition.

At a meeting of the South Shropshire planning committee, district councillors said the town council needed to consult residents again.

It said the scheme was so unpopular the town council ought to ask residents whether they would support an application for a scout and guide hut that was more in keeping with the surroundings.

Today, Councillor Susan McCormack said: “We decided to defer the application. It was felt that we should do that because there was such opposition and the design of the building seemed to be somewhat obtrusive.

“We hope the applicant will now engage with the local residents.”

Opponents said the new hut would be an eyesore.

They were also concerned a new road to the hut would reduce the amount of land available for youngsters playing at Wheeler Road.

Planning officer Jake Berriman told the meeting the council had received a petition of 413 signatures.

Scouting is one of the most valuable things children can do. It helps them to become confident, useful members of their community. Just how ugly can this hut have been? Or maybe the the good townspeople of Ludlow would rather have their teens hanging out on the playing field drinking instead?
